Adventures in Tattoos

Summer 1993 clouds rolled over the Muskegon State Park thwarting Goldilocks and my plan for a day at the beach. Being restless nineteen year olds returning to our homes seemed improbable; yet our options were restricted. As we shivered in the suddenly cool air we opted to spend our afternoon…

…getting tattoos.

Yep. Start with a cloudy day add two college students Plus twenty minutes of deliberation and the result is a lifelong ornamentation.

One of our friends wanted us to use her artist however she couldn’t remember the name or location. So we, and our audience of two, drove around lost listening to STP Interstate Love Song finally settling on a random newly opened place.

I called an invited my friend Red (from the phone at the parlor) to join us.

I chose a butterfly underneath my left ankle bone (the second most sensitive spot on a woman’s body to get inked) Goldilocks selected a sun in the same spot whereas Red, perhaps after witnessing my pain, committed to a globe/woman symbol in her calf.

Returning home I proudly show Mom and Gimpy my adornment. Unimpressed is an understatement. My father’s words still ring nearly two decades later.

“You grandfather was in the Navy, he never got a tattoo. I was in the Army and I never got a tattoo. You are a female college student who got one. Your grandmother is rolling over in her grave.”

In the days following the anticipated scabbing and itching proved bothersome for Goldilocks hence she scratched it off resulting in a faint yellow circle. I am not certain about the status of Red’s. My ankle displays a faded purple and green smudge.

Do you have a tattoo? If so, what? If not, why?

Smooches!!

Writing Prompt:
This week, we’d like you to write a piece in which a tattoo figures prominently. Fiction or creative non-fiction. There is a lot to think about: why someone would get one, what they chose, when they got it, what message does the tattoo(s) send?

You will have 300 words with which to play.
Make sure you edit and adhere to the limit.
Then come back Friday and link up!

Hee! You have a great memory to look back upon – and thankfully it’s very small!

I have three tribal turtles across the back of shoulder, one for each child. I got them not quite a year ago and I love them.

I love that you added in the music that you were listening to, who you were with, the sensitive spot. Fabulous details to hold onto.

I also liked that you added in your dad’s words- memorable, for sure!

@ Galit, Thanks. I remember that day vividly. And Goldilocks has a recurring role in my blog. I am at her house as I respond to this comment.

      @Mommypants. Thanks!

Tattoos! I have many tattoos, most have dragonflies. For me, the dragonfly represents “crazy elegance” which describes my own life.

“Crazy elegance” is a life that has included submarine duty, a trip to Poland and an accidental visit to Auschwitz, a job that included picking up dead people from the county morgue, learning a musical instrument for the first time in my late 30s, and a bunch of other things that seem random but come together for an interesting fulfilling life … like the crazy elegance you see in the flight of a dragonfly.

Got my first tattoo when I was 36 yrs old. It was a dragonfly that cost $90 and took 45 minutes, done my Hann Aitchison of L.A. Ink fame. Afterward … yup! I wanted more.

A few days later, the dragonfly looked lonely so I called Hanna and asked her to create a whole scene around the dragonfly. She came up with the smoke, cattails, bamboo and more dragonflies. It was a 6-hour piece that we did in several sessions. The final session was 3 hours and I’ll NEVER do that again!

It wasn’t the pain while sitting in the chair. The pain was in the 7 days afterward. My calf swelled, it was sensitive when I walked, it throbbed and kept me from sleeping, it always felt hot … NEVER AGAIN. 1-hour sessions are fine. A 6-hr job would have taken much longer by breaking it up in 45-60 minute session … but it’s over, and I like the result.

From that initial dragonfly … $2000 later … the tattoo I’m disappointed with is the one I had done in Budapest. It’s a scene with bats in it and it looks like one of the bats is smiling. BOOOOOO! Bats don’t smile!

When I was a little girl my Grampa and I would sit on our front porch and look at the night’s sky. With me on his lap, he would tell stories while I gazed up to try and count every star I could see…which wasn’t many considering all the light pollution in the city. The only tattoos I have are of stars as they remind me of such cherished times. They are the only thing I could ever put on my body without regret. I got my first when I was 17, with all those hard earned Mercury dollars. The man who did it was a sleazeball, note 17 is underage in the city of Chicago/state of IL. He did the outline one day and asked me to return the following day for color. I wish I knew what a horrible idea that was then. Needless to say I cried like a baby while a girlfriend let me squeeze the life out of her hand. When it was time to settle up, the “artist” took me aside where his erection was in full bloom and asked me for a hug. I got out of there with the quickness. Thankfully, my other two experiences were not at all creepy. I should really get them all touched up though…
